No. Not that kind of vamp! This site isn’t some kind of confessional about what I do in my spare time - although it is my personal site. Business stuff is elsewhere.

So why Vamp Until Ready? It’s an expression from jazz musicians. Basically, it means repeat a phrase (normally a rhythmic groove) while the MC or band leader introduces the band, or until the singer is ready to sing.

I used it once to describe my approach to avoiding writer’s block - as a professional wordsmiff, I have to leave writer’s block to the more arty amongst you - which is to pull up a document and start typing. Type the client’s contact details, the bits of copy that say ‘Headline’ and so on. Get moving - vamp - and you’ll soon be able to start writing properly.
